    2024 Model Y · Austin · HW4

    Late Model Y is HW4. Price it as full v14, not as a mystery.

    • Hardware: HW4 / AI4 on 2024 Austin builds.
    • Supercharging: paid. Model Y never received transferable SC01.
    • Buyer move: photograph Autopilot computer 4, then negotiate price and battery — not hardware.

    If a 2024 Y is priced as if hardware is unknown, you already have the answer. Do not overpay for “maybe HW4.”

    Public decoder example

    2023 Model Y · Austin · HW3

    A 2023 Model Y can still be HW3. Year is not hardware.

    • Hardware: HW3 — early Austin 2023, before the June cutover.
    • FSD: v14 Lite on this computer, not the full HW4 v14 planner.
    • Buyer move: do not pay a HW4 / full-v14 premium on a 2023 VIN without the software screen.

    Listings treat 2023 as “new enough.” Hardware changed mid-year by factory. The VIN is the first filter; the car is the verdict.

    Constructed pattern example — not a listed car

    2016 Model S · Pattern · SC01 window

    2016 Model S looks like SC01. The VIN cannot prove it.

    • Year + model sit in the SC01 window. Do not pay a transferable premium until Tesla shows $SC01.
    • The Tesla app can say Free Supercharging for both codes.
    • Buyer move: do not pay an SC01 premium without the option code and Tesla’s current transfer policy on that VIN.

    This is the expensive mistake. The year is a clue. The code is the proof. CPO / buyback can strip it even when the year looks right.
